Notes from GHSSCA February 26, 2000 meeting

  • Attendance: The attendance at the spring meeting was 41.
  • State meet structure: Much discussion was held about the positives and negatives of our first time efforts at having two state championship meets. The outcome of this lively discussion and the recommendations that will be made to the GHSA at their spring meeting are as follows:

1.  Recommend having two meets: AAAA and AAA/AA/A.

2.  Recommend having both meets in the same facility on the same weekend.

3.  Recommend having separate qualifying standards for the two meets.

There are a number of gray areas in our rules (both written and understood) concerning the conduct of the state meets. One major contributing factor in this situation is the large number of new coaches each year. Each member of the GHSSCA must work to communicate with our fellow coaches better in the future and strive to eliminate some of these misunderstandings.

  • All-State certificates: All-State certificates were distributed to those in attendance. If you did not get your certificates, contact Terry Blish at Marist.
  • Coach-of-the-Year: In the AAAA meet the coaches selected were Boys Team; Rick Creed (Parkview) and for the Girls Team; Greg Puckett (Brookwood). From the AAA/AA/A meet the selections were for the Boys Team; Terry Blish (Mairst) and for the Girls Team; Franke Marsden (Marist). Congratulations to all four fine coaches on their outstanding seasons.
  • Elections: Elections were held for the office of Vice-President and Training Officer. The two incumbents were returned to these offices: Richard Tavernaro (North Cobb) Vice-President and Pete Higgins (Westminster) as our Training Officer. Congratulations to both.
  • Swimmers-of-the-Year: Michael Kauffman (Parkview) and Christie Hupman (Brookwood) were selected from the AAAA meet. From the AAA/AA/A meet the selections were Peter Marshall (Marist) and Amy Baly (Marist). Congratulations to all four of these deserving athletes.
