NEW COACHES GUIDE FOR COACHING HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING IN GEORGIA

PRE-SEASON:

PRACTICE LOCATION:

Since most schools in Georgia do not have pools you must determine where you can get water time with the help of your Athletic Director, prior coach, booster club, or swimmers.

PRACTICE TIME:

You must also rely on your Athletic Director, prior coach, booster club, or swimmers to help get the best possible practice time for your team.  However, be prepared to practice either late in the evening or before school in the mornings.

METHOD OF COMMUNICATION WITH YOUR ATHLETES:

Establish how you will communicate with your athletes.  You may have club swimmers in your program and communication with them is most important.  In this day and time, email might be the best choice.

 ELIGIBILITY REPORTING TO GHSA (www.ghsa.net):

Your Athletic Director can bring you up to speed on this question since all athletes in school must follow the same procedure.  Click on Forms and go to GHSA section for more information.

GHSA CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS (WHITE BOOK):

Read the three pages of the Swimming Section 12, Page 149.  Your Athletic Director will have this book.  The highlights on this Section can be found by clicking on GHSA.

NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL FEDERATION SWIMMING RULE
BOOK (www.nfhs.org):

Read this rulebook.  Your Athletic Director may or may not have this rulebook.  It can ordered from:

National Federation of State High School Association

P.O. Box 690

Indianapolis, IN  46206

(317) 972-6900        Fax:  (317) 822-5700

ORDER TEAM SUITS:

You should rely on the past experience of your school and the previous policies regarding the purchasing of team suits.  You can click on Links and then go to the Merchandise heading.

DEVELOP MEET SCHEDULE:

You must also rely on your Athletic Director, prior coach, booster club, or swimmers for determining past year’s schedules.  You can then try to duplicate those or create some new sources of competition.  You will probably want to keep traditional school rivals on your schedule.  You can use the GHSA Directory “Blue Book” or click on Coaches List for contact information.

SET UP TRANSPORTATION SCHEDULE:

Your Athletic Director should provide you with the school policy for providing transportation.  This should include bus or any other form of transportation.
